Subway Tile Layout: Actual Module, Offset and Feature Alignment
A rectangular subway tile can be arranged in a straight grid or an offset pattern. Actual face size, joint width and product restrictions govern the layout.

Choose the arrangement explicitly
Record actual face length and width, joint width and intended offset. A half-offset pattern, a different stagger and a straight stack create different joints and perimeter cuts. Check manufacturer restrictions on offset and product variation instead of calling one pattern universally required.
Mark range centres, windows, outlets, corners and exposed ends on the backsplash drawing. Starting with a full tile at an arbitrary end can leave a difficult strip at a visible feature.
Use the appropriate geometry
A straight-grid pitch is face dimension plus joint width. Centered tile, centered joint and balanced edges can be compared with the tile-layout tool. That tool models a rectangular straight grid; it does not claim that its output simulates a running-bond subway layout.
For purchasing, calculate all tiled surfaces, apply a project allowance and round tile faces into boxes. Grout joints do not reduce conservative face-area purchasing. Different row offsets can change cut reuse, so inspect a drawn offset pattern separately.
Check corners and trim before ordering
Decide how the pattern returns through corners, how exposed edges finish and where movement details are required. Keep small outlet areas in the purchasing takeoff because cuts consume tile despite the opening. Use product-specific mortar and grout data. A layout centreline is a planning decision; the full installation still needs compatible substrate and assembly details.
