How to Measure for Backsplash Tile: Runs, Range and Trim
Measure each backsplash run at its actual tiled height. Add the taller range area without overlapping the base run, and measure exposed trim separately.

Divide the walls into non-overlapping rectangles
Record run width and tiled height between counters and cabinets, then mark changes in height, ends, corners and windows. For a range feature extending above the base backsplash, add only the extra area above the already counted base rectangle. Otherwise the lower portion is counted twice.
A 10 ft run at 1.5 ft high contributes 15 ft². A separate 3 ft wide extension that rises another 2 ft contributes 6 ft², for 21 ft² gross area. Deduct a substantial untiled window or opening from the appropriate run.
Do not chase small deductions
Small electrical outlet faceplates generally should remain in the purchasing area. Tiles around outlets need cuts, and the nominal deducted area is unlikely to reduce whole boxes. Measure the opening for installation coordination without treating it as a meaningful purchasing saving.
Select actual tile dimensions and tiles per box, or use manufacturer box coverage. Apply a chosen pattern and cutting allowance separately. Grout joints do not reduce conservative tile purchasing area.
Measure the finishing details
Count exposed edge trim, sill returns and any additional tiled faces explicitly. Trim length is not the same as the whole wall perimeter. Use the tile layout tool to inspect end cuts, especially around a range or centered feature. Confirm material compatibility, substrate preparation and mortar/grout instructions before placing the order.
