Match tile and grout constraints

Record actual tile dimensions, dimensional variation, edge profile and the grout product’s permitted joint range. Rectified edges do not remove all installation tolerances. The project’s installation specification may set additional criteria; obtain the actual applicable document rather than applying a remembered internet rule.

Different grout products can have different suitability and consumption. Movement joints and perimeter details are separate from ordinary grouted joints and should follow the specified assembly. The quantity engine does not design those details.

Understand the geometric effect

Tile layout pitch is face dimension plus joint width. A 12 in face with a 1/8 in joint has a 12.125 in pitch. Changing the joint alters perimeter cuts and the number of visible pieces even when the purchasing area is held constant.

The grout tool estimates a repeated-grid joint fraction, then multiplies by surface area and fill depth to obtain litres. A product consumption factor converts that volume to mass. It is not a universal grout density and does not replace the selected product’s coverage chart.

Test the full layout

Compare centered tile, centered joint and balanced-edge options. Check joints through corners, niches and fixtures, and avoid choosing joint width solely to force one dimension to fit. Confirm the selected tile/grout combination and installation tolerance before ordering. If product data conflicts with the planning example, the actual specification governs.
