Core aerators extract soil plugs leaving open holes (0.5"–0.75" diam, 2"–3" deep). Topdressing immediately filters into these voids, requiring approximately +5% to +15% extra material to maintain surface depth.

Which Topdressing Material Should You Choose?

1. Finely Screened Topsoil

Must be screened through a 1/4-inch mesh to remove stones, clay clods, and debris. Adds permanent mineral mass to fill dips and level high/low lawn undulations.

2. 100% Mature Compost

Introduces beneficial soil microbes, retains moisture around newly scattered grass seed, and naturally breaks down thatch. Decomposes over 12 months, so it does not provide permanent structural leveling.

3. 70/30 Sand-Compost Mix

The golf course standard. Medium-coarse masonry sand (ASTM C33) creates laser-flat putting surface grades, resists compaction, and improves drainage in heavy clay lawns.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much topsoil do I need to topdress a lawn?

At the recommended 1/4-inch depth for established lawns, you need 1 cubic yard of finely screened topsoil or compost for every 1,296 square feet of turf. For a typical 5,000 sq. ft. lawn, plan on approximately 3.86 cubic yards (or about 4.05 yards with a 5% core aeration hole buffer).

How many bags of topsoil do I need to topdress my yard?

For a 5,000 sq. ft. yard at a 1/4-inch depth (approx. 109.4 cubic feet with core aeration allowance), you will need approximately 146 bags of standard 0.75 cu. ft. (~40 lb) topsoil, or 110 bags of 1.0 cu. ft. compost.

What is the best material for topdressing a lawn?

It depends on your primary goal. For nutrient enrichment, soil biology, and overseeding germination, 100% fine organic compost or a 50/50 loam-compost blend is best. For precision leveling and improving heavy clay drainage, a 70% coarse sand and 30% organic compost blend (the golf green standard) is preferred.

Can you put too much topsoil on grass?

Yes. Applying more than 1/2 inch (12 mm) of topsoil in a single application can completely bury grass crowns, depriving blades of sunlight and oxygen, leading to fungal rot and turf suffocation. For severely uneven lawns, apply 1/4 to 1/2 inch in repeated cycles across several growing seasons.

Should I aerate before topdressing?

Yes. Core aerating prior to topdressing creates open channels that allow sand, compost, and loam to penetrate 2 to 3 inches down into the root zone. This relieves soil compaction and incorporates organic matter directly into the subsoil.
