Standard Tile Sizes: Nominal, Actual and Modular Dimensions
Use actual tile face dimensions for layout and quantity. A nominal size, metric marketing label and installed module with grout can describe different widths.

Ask for actual dimensions and variation
Common size labels are product descriptions rather than universal exact dimensions. Verify actual face length and width, thickness, dimensional variation and whether the product is rectified. Obtain the manufacturer’s joint and installation guidance for the selected tile.
A tile advertised as 12 in may not have an exact 12 in face. Likewise, a metric label may describe a nominal module rather than a precise conversion. Do not assume two tile families with the same nominal label fit one interchangeable grid.
Keep face area and pitch separate
For a hypothetical exact 12 × 12 in face, area is 1 ft². With a 1/8 in joint, layout pitch is 12.125 in. Purchasing uses tile face area conservatively; layout uses pitch to locate joints and cuts. Grout quantity uses joint width and fill depth. These are three distinct geometric tasks.
Box coverage should come from the actual package. If it is available, the tile calculator’s coverage mode can use it instead of inferring coverage from a marketing size.
Check coordination before ordering
Measure the wall or floor and compare origins along both axes. Check how dimensions meet niches, trims, fixtures and adjacent materials. Test a representative tile sample or dry layout when variation affects the joint plan. A larger tile can reduce joint count while increasing cutting and substrate demands; size alone does not determine a simpler installation.
