Herringbone Tile Layout: Module, Orientation and Cut Planning

Herringbone uses an interlocking rectangular-tile pattern. Its rotated edges and perimeter cuts need a pattern drawing; a straight-grid result is not a herringbone layout.

Define the pattern module

Record actual face dimensions, joint width, intended orientation and the repeated pattern. A tile’s nominal aspect ratio may not create the intended interlock once actual dimensions and joints are considered. Dry-lay a representative module and check the manufacturer’s layout guidance.

Distinguish herringbone from chevron, which uses different end geometry. Do not use a diagonal square-grid calculator as proof that a rectangular herringbone pattern will fit fixtures or perimeter edges.

Measure purchasing area conservatively

Net tiled area still comes from measured surfaces and substantial untiled openings. Tile count uses face area and a separately chosen pattern allowance. For 100 ft² and a hypothetical 1 ft² face with 15% selected allowance, the requirement is 115 tiles before box rounding. The 15% is a user planning example, not a TCNA requirement.

Perimeter cuts may be difficult to reuse because orientation and finished-edge requirements differ. Check a scaled pattern plan before selecting the allowance or ordering spare boxes.

Coordinate the centreline and edges

Choose a visual axis, inspect how the pattern meets doorways and adjacent materials, and plan edge trim and movement details. The straight-grid layout tool remains useful for comparison layouts only; this release does not claim an optimized herringbone simulator. Use the main tile calculator for purchasing and a product-specific pattern drawing for installation decisions.
