First and Last Plank Width: Balance the Edge Rows
Balance both edge rows after deducting the specified expansion gaps. A narrow final strip can often be avoided by reducing the first row as well.

Calculate usable width
Usable width = room width − 2 × expansion gap. Divide by actual plank face width and round up to a whole row count. If more than one row is needed, balanced edge width = [usable width − (rows − 2) × plank width] / 2. A one-row field uses the entire usable width.
For an explicit 100 in room width, 6 in planks and 0.25 in gap at each side, usable width is 99.5 in. Rows = ceil(99.5 / 6) = 17. Balanced edges = (99.5 − 15 × 6) / 2 = 4.75 in each.
Compare against the entered product minimum
A balanced value can still be narrower than a specified minimum. Change direction or product geometry, or resolve a different permitted layout; do not hide the violation by increasing waste. The tool reports a warning when the entered minimum is not met.
Use actual face width and the correct measurement plane. Walls that are not parallel can change the cut along a row. The simple rectangular model cannot replace scribing from a surveyed room shape.
Check end pieces and stagger too
Balanced side widths solve one axis only. Along the room, starter cuts, full planks and final end pieces must satisfy product instructions. The schedule checks adjacent-row stagger after short-end adjustments, because correcting one end cut can create a new joint problem. Keep this row plan separate from carton purchasing; installed pieces are not an optimized stock-cutting order.
