Fence Cost per Linear Foot: Compare Complete Quotes
Divide a clearly scoped project total by the measured boundary length. Gate hardware, corners, removal and foundations can make two equal-length fences cost very different amounts.

Dated US market references
These published ranges provide an early budget comparison. They are broad US dollar references, verified on 4 October 2026. Local quotes, selected products and the complete job scope determine your price. They do not populate calculator prices or convert to other countries’ markets.

General fence installation: inclusions and source
Market: United States — broad national editorial reference; USD. Includes: Fence materials and ordinary installation.
Excluded or requiring quote confirmation: Confirm gates, survey, demolition, grading, permits, disposal and tax separately.
Source-reported average: $23.00 / linear ft. This is a survey reference, not a contractor offer.
Uses the Cost by Fence Size paragraph, not a material-specific table. The source explicitly reports a $23/ft average; it is not the midpoint of the range.

Choose the denominator before comparing prices
A contractor may quote the entire measured line, including gates, while a materials supplier prices only net infill. Record both. A 100 ft boundary containing a 4 ft gate has 96 ft of infill, but still has a 100 ft project line. Dividing the same total by 96 instead of 100 raises the reported unit rate without changing the job. State which length you used.
Keep materials-only, supply-and-deliver, and installed quotes separate. An installed quote should identify excavation, posts, footings, infill, rails, caps, fixings and gate work. Surveying, demolition, spoil disposal, permits and difficult access may be separate line items.
Build a quote schedule
| Quote item | Quantity basis | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Infill | Net length or panels | Height and system |
| Posts and foundations | Physical posts | Corners and gate posts |
| Gates | Complete assemblies | Hardware and automation |
| Site work | Itemized amount | Removal, access, spoil |
For a 100 ft straight run at a maximum 8 ft spacing, ceil(100 / 8) gives 13 bays and 14 posts before gates. Use that takeoff to request comparable material quantities. Cost = sum(purchased quantity × quoted unit price) plus separately quoted installation and site work.
Date and market boundaries
Use current supplier and installer quotes from the same country, locality, currency and project date. The dated US reference above is a starting point; use the quote method here to compare your actual job. Save the quote’s validity period and tax treatment. A low unit rate can omit work that another quote includes; normalize scope before choosing a supplier.
