Dated US market references
These published ranges provide an early budget comparison. They are broad US dollar references, verified on 4 October 2026. Local quotes, selected products and the complete job scope determine your price. They do not populate calculator prices or convert to other countries’ markets.

Wood fence installation: inclusions and source
Market: United States — broad national editorial reference; USD. Includes: The source’s overall wood-fence installation rate.
Excluded or requiring quote confirmation: Premium styles, finishing, removal, grading, gates, access and tax need itemized quotes.
Uses the dedicated per-linear-foot section. Privacy and custom picket styles can exceed this broad range; it is not a lumber-only rate.

Specify the wood system
A picket fence, lapped privacy fence and horizontal fence can use the same boundary length yet need different stock. List actual face width, board thickness and length, rail size, treatment, surface finish and permitted defects. Nominal lumber width is insufficient for a board takeoff. Identify whether the supplier prices individual boards, bundles or panels.
Confirm which components will contact soil and which require appropriate treatment or separation. The quantity calculator does not select a durability specification. Posts supporting gates need their own design and price; do not assume every post can use the line-post specification.
Separate board count from the labor scope
For a clear 96 in field with 5.5 in boards and a 0.25 in gap, ceil((96 + 0.25) / (5.5 + 0.25)) gives 17 boards. Their combined face width is 93.5 in, leaving an equal gap of 2.5 / 16 = 0.15625 in. With a 10% purchasing allowance, that one field needs 19 boards. Repeating the whole fence as one field can underestimate independent end cuts.
Price rails, fasteners, concrete and caps separately. Ask whether the installer’s finishing allowance covers both sides, edges and gate work, and whether staining is included at all.
Compare complete delivered quotes
Material subtotal = purchased boards × board price + rails × rail price + physical posts × post price + bags × concrete price. Add delivery, removal, labor and finishing only from actual quotes. Record locality, currency, quote date and whether tax is included. The published US range above is broad installation context, not a supplier quote for your selected species. A cheaper species or thinner board may change both the installation details and the ongoing maintenance plan.
