Privacy Fence Cost: Specify the Sightline and System
A privacy-fence quote needs a named infill arrangement, height and gate design. The word privacy alone does not establish board count, wind loading or visibility at an angle.

Choose what the quote must achieve
A close-spaced single row, lapped boards, backer-and-cover boards, routed vinyl panels and steel panels solve privacy in different ways. Shadowbox fencing can conceal a straight-on view while allowing angled sightlines. State the intended sightline and whether gaps after wood movement are acceptable.
Height and solid infill affect the project’s loading conditions. Have spacing, posts and footings specified for the actual site before using quantities to compare prices. A materials estimator cannot approve a tall solid fence or a fence with privacy slats.
Quantify the extra coverage
For a 96 in field using 6 in boards with 1 in lap, the first board covers 6 in and subsequent boards advance 5 in. Count = 1 + ceil((96 − 6) / 5) = 19. The same field using separate backer and cover rows must be counted by those rows rather than reusing the lap formula. Apply purchase allowance after the correct system count.
Price gates as complete assemblies. A wide privacy gate may require different framing, posts and hardware from the ordinary fence. Include caps, trim, capping and finish where the selected system uses them.
Avoid ambiguous installed rates
Ask each installer to identify system, finished height, gate openings, demolition, disposal, footings, finish, tax and delivery. Keep the quote date and country/currency beside the comparison. Use the dated market reference above for context and current project quotes as the purchase basis. Divide a fully scoped total by measured project length only after you have normalized the inclusions.
