Mineral Wool vs Fiberglass: Fit, Declared R and Package Coverage

Compare the actual batt products at the thickness your assembly can accommodate. Material names do not establish one universal R-value, dimension or package yield.

Compare like-for-like products

Record declared thermal resistance, supplied thickness, width, length, facing and application. A mineral-wool batt and a fiberglass batt can have different dimensions and pack coverage even when their nominal R labels appear similar. Use the exact SKU rather than assuming all products fit the same cavity.

Manufacturer documentation establishes dimensions and product properties. ENERGY STAR’s material-selection information provides application context, but it does not replace the selected product’s installation instructions. Acoustic or fire-related claims require the actual tested product or assembly, not a generalized material label.

Fit changes the quantity workflow

Coverage mode rounds net area into declared pack coverage. Piece mode counts how many batts fit each cavity in width and length. For ten identical cavities each needing two batt lengths, the raw count is 20 pieces. If a package contains eight pieces and no extra allowance is chosen, ceil(20 / 8) = three packs.

That piece example does not assume offcuts from one cavity can fill another. Check fitting around services and the product’s permitted handling; do not count compressed or poorly fitted material as equivalent installed performance.

Choose the assembly outcome

Compare installation access, cavity fit, facing, moisture strategy, handling and product cost at the required resistance. A whole-wall estimate also needs framing paths and continuous layers. Ask for product-specific care and installation information before selecting a material. The batt calculator orders quantity; it does not rank every mineral-wool product above or below every fiberglass product.
