Wall Insulation Calculator

Subtract windows and doors from separate wall runs, estimate full-height cavity counts and order coverage packs. Keep quantity separate from whole-wall performance.

Start with the editable example below. Dimensions retain their physical size when units change. Region sets currency labels without converting currencies; confirm entered quotes after changing region. Thermal inputs labeled US R retain that unit in every region.

Measured insulation surfaces

Use non-overlapping rectangles. Enter openings as area on the surface they interrupt.

Stud count is a planning approximation. Headers, corners and framing fractions require drawings. Nominal cavity R does not equal whole-wall R.

How it works

Net wall area = gross − openings. Approximate cavity count rounds each wall width by the entered stud spacing; it does not deduct individual opening framing.

Assumptions and limitations

Stud count is a planning approximation. Headers, corners and framing fractions require drawings. Nominal cavity R does not equal whole-wall R.

Whole packages round upward after the chosen allowance. Physical geometry and purchase reserve are separate. Manufacturer and project specifications override editable examples; the selected region does not establish a local code requirement.

Scope: Wall retrofit guidance

Used for: Continuous-insulation and thermal-bridge context.

Does not establish: Cavity R equals whole-wall R; Universal framing fraction.

Use actual framing and complete heat-flow paths for assembly estimates.
