Hardwood Flooring Waste: Stock Lengths, Grade and Repair Reserve
Hardwood allowance should reflect actual stock and the row plan. Random-length inventory, selection defects and retained repair material need separate consideration.

Inspect how the product is supplied
Record fixed or random lengths, actual face width, grade, bundle coverage and finish. Random-length bundles cannot be exactly optimized without an inventory of board lengths. Selection and cutting losses depend on the product and installation; one universal percentage is not asserted.
Measure the net footprint before adding allowance. Keep planned spares visible so future repair stock is not confused with accidental package surplus. Store matching product information with retained boards.
Apply allowance to the proper unit
For 100 ft² and a 3 in actual face width, net linear stock is 400 ft. A selected 10% allowance makes it 440 ft. If the supplier instead sells 20 ft² bundles, planned area is 110 ft² and the order is six full bundles, supplying 120 ft².
The 10% here is an arithmetic example, not an NWFA mandate. A supplier recommendation should be recorded with its applicable product and layout rather than generalized to every wood floor.
Use layout without claiming perfect reuse
Doorways, borders, direction changes and minimum end pieces affect cuts. A fixed-plank schedule can flag short ends and narrow edges when its stock assumptions match. It cannot represent every random-length bundle. Confirm moisture, acclimation, substrate and installation requirements separately; extra stock does not correct an unsuitable assembly. Order only after quantity and installation scope have both been checked.
