Solid and engineered describe wood-floor construction. Select the actual product for the substrate, installation method and desired finish before comparing quantities.

Compare product-specific capabilities

Record species, face width, thickness, wear-layer information where applicable, finish, stock lengths and installation method. Do not promise that every engineered floor can be refinished or that every solid floor is suitable over every substrate. The selected manufacturer’s product and installation information govern those decisions.

Moisture assessment, acclimation and site conditions belong in the project scope. An area or linear-foot takeoff cannot approve the substrate or predict dimensional movement.

Use the correct selling unit

Both solid and engineered floors can be estimated by bundle coverage. A face-width estimate converts area to linear stock without claiming exact cut optimization. For a hypothetical 100 ft² floor and 3 in actual face width, 400 linear ft are required before allowance. At 10%, the planning total is 440 linear ft.

Random-length bundles require actual inventory for a precise row cutting plan. A fixed-length plank schedule is useful only when the stock assumptions match the product.

Compare the finished system

Include approved underlayment or adhesive, fasteners, trims, preparation and site finishing if applicable. Evaluate repairs, matching-stock availability and product-care instructions. Compare dated quotes for equal installed area and scope. Construction type is one decision input; the selected product’s declared performance and installation constraints complete the comparison.
