Carpet Roll Widths and Seam Planning: Drops, Repeat and Pile Direction
Use the actual supplied roll width and a planned pile direction. Roll area can exceed room area substantially, even without a percentage allowance.

Calculate both orientations
For a 10 × 14 ft room on an actual 12 ft roll, with no trim or repeat, running the 14 ft dimension along the roll requires one drop: 14 linear ft and 168 ft² purchased material. The rotated orientation needs two 10 ft drops: 20 linear ft and 240 ft².
These are geometric alternatives. The installer should resolve acceptable seam positions and pile direction using the selected carpet and CRI residential installation context. Auto mode chooses the least theoretical material independently per room, not a globally approved installation.
Round each pattern drop
If a 13 ft drop plus 0.5 ft combined trim must match a 2 ft lengthwise repeat, adjusted drop = ceil(13.5 / 2) × 2 = 14 ft. Apply repeat rounding to each drop before summing roll length. Across-width pattern matching may need additional project-specific planning beyond this one-dimensional repeat model.
Keep all rooms locked to the chosen axis when pile direction needs consistency. Do not rotate an individual room solely to reduce material if it conflicts with that plan.
Do not assume all offcuts transfer
Multiple rooms are estimated separately. Shared roll nesting requires an actual cutting plan, pattern matching and compatible pile direction. Record stairs, closets, doorways and transitions explicitly, and verify the supplier’s order increment. The calculator reports linear roll length and seams; it does not certify seam placement or optimize cross-room reuse.
