Underlayment Calculator

Estimate rolls, sheets or boards using effective coverage after a specified overlap. Show gross material separately from covered floor area.

Start with the editable example below. Dimensions retain their physical size when units change. Region sets currency labels without converting currencies; confirm entered quotes after changing region.

Measured rooms and floor surfaces

Use non-overlapping rectangles. Enter openings as area on the surface they interrupt.

Subtracting overlap on every roll is a conservative area estimate. A separate underlayment is not universally required for all flooring products. Products may include attached pads, prohibit extra layers or require approved acoustic/moisture systems. Manufacturer-approved products and instructions override generic planning assumptions; verify compatibility before ordering. NALFA applies only to laminate, while resilient flooring follows RFCI context and its own product instructions.

How it works

Roll effective coverage = (width − overlap) × length. Sheets and boards use width × length without an assumed overlap.

Assumptions and limitations

Subtracting overlap on every roll is a conservative area estimate. A separate underlayment is not universally required for all flooring products. Products may include attached pads, prohibit extra layers or require approved acoustic/moisture systems. Manufacturer-approved products and instructions override generic planning assumptions; verify compatibility before ordering. Whole packages round upward after the chosen allowance. Physical geometry and purchase reserve are separate. Manufacturer and project specifications override editable examples; the selected region does not establish a local code requirement.

North American Laminate Flooring Association: Installation Guidance

Open the source · Association resources · Reference checked 2026-10-04

Scope: Laminate installation resources

Used for: Laminate product and installation guidance only.

Does not establish: Resilient vinyl installation requirements; Universal expansion gap; Universal underlayment requirement.

Use the current product document to verify numerical inputs. This reference applies to laminate portions of mixed-system pages. Product-specific instructions override editable arithmetic examples.

Resilient Floor Covering Institute (RFCI): Rigid Core

Open the source · Web guidance; edition not stated · Reference checked 2026-10-04

Scope: Rigid-core resilient flooring context

Used for: Attached-pad context; Manufacturer control of flatness, expansion, moisture and underlayment.

Does not establish: Universal need for separate underlayment; Minimum cuts or maximum room dimensions for every product.

Product construction and installation method determine applicability; follow the manufacturer instructions.

Shaw Floors: Residential Use of Second Underlayment

Open the source · Revision 02062026 · Reference checked 2026-10-04 · Published/updated 2026-02-06

Scope: Second-underlayment compatibility for specified Shaw platforms

Used for: Approved and prohibited secondary layers depend on product platform; Product-specific acoustic-system context.

Does not establish: Universal requirement for extra padding; A recommended thickness preset for every floor.

Attached pads do not imply another layer is needed. Verify the exact product, substrate and approved acoustic/moisture system before using the quantity estimate.
