Tile Installation Cost: Surfaces, Preparation and Setting Materials
Tile installation quotes should identify the entire assembly: substrate preparation, tile, mortar, grout, trims and any waterproofing. Tile boxes alone describe only part of the project.

Dated US market references
These published ranges provide an early budget comparison. They are broad US dollar references, verified on 4 October 2026. Local quotes, selected products and the complete job scope determine your price. They do not populate calculator prices or convert to other countries’ markets.

Separate material groups and surfaces
Measure floors and walls independently, subtract substantial untiled openings, and list niche returns, benches and curbs as their own faces. Different products round into separate boxes. A small remainder in wall boxes cannot supply a different floor tile.
Record actual tile size, layout, joint width, exposed trim and selected assembly. Waterproofing or movement-joint details are project specifications, not inferred from tile quantity. Confirm preparation and access before comparing an installed rate.
Use product-specific setting quantities
For 100 ft² at a chosen 10% tile allowance and 1 ft² tiles, buy at least 110 tiles. At ten tiles per box that is eleven boxes. Mortar coverage is a separate manufacturer range; grout uses joint geometry and product consumption data. Do not apply the tile waste percentage as evidence of required mortar contact.
Ask for the mortar/trowel configuration, substrate work and grout type. TCNA and ANSI publications concern installation methods and criteria, not a universal bag yield or waste percentage.
Normalize the installed quote
List removal, preparation, waterproofing where specified, tile, mortar, grout, trims, labor, delivery and tax. Record project market, currency and quote date. The dated US floor-tile reference above does not price shower waterproofing, wall work or specialty patterns. Compare the same assembly and layout before dividing the complete total by installed area.
