Loft Insulation Thickness in the UK: Top-Up and U-Value Context
A loft top-up needs measured existing depth, new roll thickness and a chosen assembly target. A depth recommendation alone does not demonstrate Building Regulations compliance.

Choose loft floor or roof insulation
Insulating the loft floor separates rooms below from an unconditioned loft. Insulating the roofline describes a different thermal boundary and affects ventilation, access and storage decisions. Energy Saving Trust’s current advice covers these choices. Identify the project strategy before ordering rolls.
The often-cited 270 mm mineral-wool figure is not used here as a verified current compliance prescription. The current source text checked for this release did not expose that number directly. The calculator accepts your chosen depth rather than treating a remembered recommendation as a regulation.
Count complete layers
For an explicit custom example, existing depth is 100 mm, target depth is 300 mm and new rolls are 100 mm thick. Top-up is 200 mm, so two complete new layers are needed. A 50 m² area with 10 m² roll coverage and zero allowance uses five rolls per layer and ten rolls total. If the target required only 150 mm extra, whole 100 mm layers would still result in two layers; the tool shows the finished depth.
Record first-layer and cross-layer areas separately when obstructions or layer layouts differ. Do not count one roll’s coverage as two layers.
Confirm jurisdiction and applicable edition
England’s Approved Document L listing now includes 2026 guidance and earlier editions for projects under earlier standards. Applicability depends on transitions and the project. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own regulatory context. Whole-element thermal performance, continuity and installation details matter; a specified depth alone cannot establish a U-value or compliance. Check ventilation, access and service clearances with the project instructions.
