Insulation Cost per Square Foot: Quantity and Quote Scope

Compare insulation quotes at the same installed thickness, thermal target and assembly. Area alone cannot make batt, loose-fill and spray-foam prices equivalent.

Dated US market references

These published ranges provide an early budget comparison. They are broad US dollar references, verified on 4 October 2026. Local quotes, selected products and the complete job scope determine your price. They do not populate calculator prices or convert to other countries’ markets.

Check the scope and unit before comparing rates.

Attic insulation installation: inclusions and source

Market: United States — broad national editorial reference; USD. Includes: The article’s broad attic insulation project rate.

Excluded or requiring quote confirmation: Old insulation removal, air sealing, remediation, access work, inspection and tax need separate confirmation.

No particular product, depth or target R is guaranteed by this range. Blown-in and foam-specific reports use different scopes.

Blown-in insulation installation: inclusions and source

Market: United States — broad national editorial reference; USD. Includes: Material and installation in the article’s Size of the Area section.

Excluded or requiring quote confirmation: Air sealing, wall repair, removal, remediation, equipment access and tax need confirmation.

Broad range spans different locations, products and thermal targets. Do not combine it with a separate labor rate.

Spray foam installation: inclusions and source

Market: United States — broad national editorial reference; USD. Includes: Open- and closed-cell foam installation reference per board foot.

Excluded or requiring quote confirmation: Removal, remediation, access, protective finishes, air sealing and tax need confirmation.

One board foot = 1 ft² at 1 in thickness. Multiply this unit rate by the specified inches to compare area rates; never label it as a thickness-free square-foot price.

Define the quoted assembly

Record the surface being insulated, access, existing material, target resistance, product, thickness and moisture or facing details. Distinguish supply-only prices from installed prices. A square-foot rate for one batt SKU does not describe a complete wall with continuous insulation and air sealing.

List removal, preparation, air sealing, ventilation baffles, barriers, protection, delivery, labor, disposal and tax separately. Some products are priced by a pack; foam may be quoted by installed area at a specified thickness or by board feet. Normalize the actual coverage unit before comparing.

Round the material order first

A 100 ft² net surface at a 10% allowance needs 110 ft² planned coverage. With 40 ft² per pack, 110 / 40 = 2.75 packs mathematically, so buy three packs. Purchased coverage is 120 ft²; surplus beyond the planned quantity is 10 ft². Material cost is three times the quoted pack price, not 2.75 times that price.

For layered boards or loft rolls, round each layer independently. For loose fill, verify minimum bag density as well as coverage. These are different workflows, so do not transfer a pack rate blindly between systems.

Keep the market record beside the rate

Record quote date, country, locality, currency, tax treatment and validity. The dated references above retain each report’s unit and scope; they do not establish a single price for every thermal assembly. Divide the complete quoted cost by net installed area only after matching product and scope. Thermal recommendations come from applicable guidance; current pricing comes from the supplier or contractor, not an energy code.
