How to Measure a Bathroom for Tile: Separate Floors and Walls

Keep floor and wall products separate, measure each tiled face and deduct openings from the surface they interrupt. Partial wall height and shower details need explicit dimensions.

Measure the floor and each wall

An 8 × 6 ft floor contributes 48 ft². A wall 8 ft wide tiled to 4 ft contributes 32 ft² before openings. Record other walls as additional rectangles rather than multiplying room perimeter by an assumed full height when some walls differ.

Deduct untiled doors or windows from the correct wall. Include returns or surrounds as separate faces if they receive tile. A floor product and a wall product are separate material groups, even when their nominal sizes match.

Treat shower geometry explicitly

List the shower floor, back and side walls, optional ceiling, niche back and returns, bench top/front/sides and curb top/inside/outside/ends where applicable. Deduct a niche opening from the main wall before adding the niche surfaces. The shower tool allows each face to be labeled and assigned a floor, wall or accent product.

Round packages by material group. Do not pool different tile products into one box count or use leftover wall coverage to satisfy a floor order.

Check the assembly and trims

Measure exposed trim independently. Confirm waterproofing, substrate, drainage, movement joints and product compatibility through the specified assembly; the quantity takeoff does not design them. Use a layout check for feature alignment and edge cuts, then estimate mortar and grout from their own product data. Save the labeled face schedule with the order for on-site checking.
