Fence Panel Sizes: Nominal Width vs Installed Module
Use installed coverage, not a panel’s marketing size. Post centres, clear infill, rail engagement and overall panel width may describe different dimensions.

Ask which dimension the supplier means
A panel labeled 8 ft may not cover exactly 8 ft of boundary between installed post centres. Routed rails, brackets and post faces can change the effective module. Obtain a dimensioned installation drawing before entering module width. Treat wood, vinyl, aluminum and steel systems separately.
ASTM F964 concerns rigid PVC profile performance and scope; it does not define a universal vinyl panel width. Steel product families likewise have their own installed dimensions. Trademarks identify a selected product, not a generic geometric constant.
Round spans independently
A 17 ft span with a confirmed 8 ft module needs three panels. The final module is 17 − 2 × 8 = 1 ft. A separate 17 ft span needs another three. Combining the two lengths before rounding would report five and understate the order by one.
Gates and corners break the infill into spans. A shared corner is one physical post, but each incident span still has its own panel sequence. Check the calculator’s cut-panel list against the installation drawing.
Check whether the cut is allowed
Some systems permit shortened panels; others require approved fittings or a minimum remaining infill width. Do not buy a full panel assuming any arbitrarily narrow cut is usable. Consider shifting the start position or equalizing two end cuts if that creates permitted geometry. Slope, stepping and rackability also need product-specific instructions; the straight-span estimator does not select those details.
