1. Master Deck Board Dimensions & Profiles Table

In residential construction, boards are ordered by their nominal size (the dimensions before planing and drying), but all framing spacing and material takeoffs must be calculated using their actual dimensions:

2. Why Actual Dimensions Differ from Nominal Names

In lumber grading standards (such as DOC PS 20), lumber is named after its rough green sawn state before kiln drying and mill planing:

  • Milling & Drying: When green lumber is cut at the sawmill, a 2×6 rough blank is roughly 2.0" × 6.0". As moisture evaporates in the kiln, the wood shrinks.
  • Surfacing (S4S): The board passes through a high-speed planer that surfaces all four sides and radiuses the edges for barefoot safety, shaving 0.25" to 0.50" off each dimension.
  • The Rule: Nominal 2" lumber is always 1.5" actual. Nominal 6" lumber is always 5.5" actual.

3. 5/4×6 Radius Edge vs. 2×6 Heavy Decking

Choosing between 5/4×6 and 2×6 decking affects both structural joist spacing and total material cost:

🥇 5/4×6 Radius Edge Decking (1.00" × 5.5")

The industry standard for residential backyard decks. Thinner, lighter to haul, and milled with rounded edges that resist splintering. Requires joists spaced at 16" on-center (or 12" on-center for diagonal layouts).

🏋️ 2×6 Heavy Framing Decking (1.50" × 5.5")

Commonly used on commercial boardwalks, boat docks, heavy snow-load regions, and utility decks where joists are spaced 24" on-center. Offers superior flexural stiffness and fastener pull-out resistance.

4. How Board Width Drives Row Count Calculations

The number of board rows you must order is governed by the effective board width (board face width plus gap spacing):

Effective Board Width = Actual Face Width (in) + Installation Gap (in)
Total Rows = Math.ceil((Deck Width in feet × 12) ÷ Effective Board Width in inches)

Because you cannot purchase half a board row, the calculation always rounds up to the next integer. A 5.5-inch board with a 1/4-inch gap covers 5.75 inches per row. On a 10-foot deck (120 inches wide), 120 ÷ 5.75 = 20.87 → 21 whole rows.

5. Choosing Stock Board Lengths to Eliminate Cut-Off Waste

Lumber and composite decking are manufactured and sold in standard stock lengths available in 2-foot increments (8', 10', 12', 14', 16', and 20' — with 12', 16', and 20' being the most universally stocked). They are not sold in 1-foot increments, and boards are not 2 feet long. Purchasing the wrong stock length leads to massive off-cut scrap that dramatically increases project cost:

Deck Run LengthOptimal Stock Board LengthBoards Per RowOff-Cut Waste Per Row
10-foot run1 board (or 0.5 × 20')0 ft scrap
12-foot run1 board (12')0 ft scrap
16-foot run1 board (16')0 ft scrap
16-foot run (using 12' boards)12-foot stock (Sub-optimal)2 boards (24' purchased)8 ft scrap per row (33% waste!)

6. Multi-Width Decking: Narrow, Standard & Wide Boards

High-end capped polymer PVC decking (such as TimberTech AZEK Vintage) allows builders to combine different board widths across a single floor plane:

  • Narrow Boards (3.5" actual): Creates a classic Victorian porch or yacht decking aesthetic.
  • Standard Boards (5.5" actual): The standard balanced proportion for 90%+ of residential decks.
  • Wide Boards (7.25" actual): Creates a modern, clean floor look with 30% fewer seams and faster installation.
