Crawl-Space Insulation: Floor Above or Foundation Walls
Floor insulation and perimeter-wall insulation define different thermal boundaries. Choose a project strategy before estimating either quantity.

Compare the two boundaries
Insulating the floor above generally keeps heat in the rooms while leaving the crawl space outside the thermal boundary. Insulating foundation walls moves that boundary around the crawl space and needs an appropriate moisture, ventilation and conditioning approach. Neither option is universally suitable.
Record ground moisture, water entry, services, vents, combustion equipment and access. Use the applicable assembly guidance and local requirements to resolve those details. The material calculator cannot make a crawl space dry or select a ventilation strategy.
Measure both scenarios without mixing them
For a 30 × 20 ft crawl space, floor area is 600 ft². If the foundation walls are 3 ft high, perimeter is 100 ft and gross wall area is 300 ft². In wall mode, subtract measured openings from 300 ft²; add any separately measured rim area. In floor mode, openings deduct from the 600 ft² floor surface.
A 40 ft² pack with zero allowance would need 15 packs for the floor or eight for 300 ft² of walls. The quantity difference alone is not a recommendation for one strategy.
Keep transitions in the scope
Specify the rim, sill, access opening and penetrations alongside the main insulation. Confirm product attachment, protected surfaces and moisture-control details. Use batt, rigid or foam quantity methods only after choosing the product and assembly. Obtain quotes with the same boundary and included preparation; otherwise their unit rates are not comparable.
