Blown-In Insulation vs Batts: Coverage, Access and Layer Planning

Loose fill and batts use different takeoff methods. Choose a suitable assembly, then compare manufacturer-chart bags with the actual batt dimensions and layer arrangement.

Match the installation situation

An open attic can accommodate a continuous loose-fill layer where access and installation conditions permit it. Batts or rolls need a layout around joists, services and access. Closed cavities use their own product application requirements, so do not apply an attic blowing chart to a wall.

Inspect the existing layer and air-control details first. Top-up across framing, cavity-only insulation and a new assembly can produce different continuity. ENERGY STAR’s attic guidance treats sealing and insulation as related tasks.

Estimate each product with its own method

Loose-fill bag count is the maximum of the coverage-based count and the minimum-density count. Batt coverage mode rounds net area by labeled pack coverage; piece mode rounds each cavity dimension by actual batt dimensions before pack rounding.

For a hypothetical 200 ft² layer at 40 ft² per batt pack and zero allowance, the order is five packs. That figure is not a loose-fill bag count, and it does not represent two batt layers. Multiple layers need their own material quantity; a layer’s area does not shrink when it crosses another layer.

Compare finished thickness and service access

Record required resistance, installed thickness, clearance details, access hatch treatment and future service routes. Loose fill may specify installed and settled depths; batts require the actual product fit and supplied thickness. Compare quotes with air sealing, baffles and cleanup on the same basis. Neither workflow is universally better merely because its packages are easier to count.
